The first HOT (Hands on Training) HLA Course was organised by the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Transplant Immunology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital from 17th September to 29th September 2018 under the aegis of Indian society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology (ISBTI) and led by Dr Mohit Chowdhry, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Transplant Immunology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi and his team. The Course was attended by 11 candidatesfrom across the country. Each day was dedicated to a particular technique and testing principles. A short overview of the technique and demonstration was initially provided to the candidates by a dedicated team of demonstrators and then hands on training was provided to each one of the candidates. Candidates enjoyed performing and interpreting the results all through. Techniques from lymphocyte extraction, CDC crossmatch to advanced procedures like the testing platforms on Luminex and their interpretation was provided. We had external faculties from Nephrology, Histopathology, Transplant surgery, experts in the field of Flow cytometer, NGS to train and sensitise the participants. There was an open discussion lead by the hospital administration on the requirements for cadaveric as well as live related solid organ transplants. Dr Anil Handoo, Director, Lab Services, BLK Hospital, New Delhi was kind enough to spare time and train the candidates on flow cytometer principles and applications. He along with Dr Rajesh Sawant, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai were the external assessors for the exam conducted for the candidates on the last day to evaluate their performances. The examiners highly appreciated the candidates’ performance as each one excelled beyond the expectations.
